He flew as a mission specialist on Columbia’s STS-5 mission in November 1982, the first flight the shuttle programme classed as operational. The crew of four was the largest to fly in one spacecraft up to that time, and the mission deployed the first two commercial communications satellites from a shuttle.
Achievements
William Lenoir was selected as a NASA scientist-astronaut in August 1967 and completed flight training at Laughlin Air Force Base, receiving his wings in 1969. He was backup science pilot for Skylab 3 and Skylab 4. On Skylab 4 he co-led the visual observations project and coordinated the solar science experiments.
He flew on STS-5 aboard Columbia from 11 to 16 November 1982 and, together with Joseph Allen, was one of the first two mission specialists to fly. He logged more than 122 hours in space. The mission deployed the SBS-3 and Anik C3 communications satellites. He received the NASA Exceptional Service Medal in 1974 and the NASA Space Flight Medal in 1982. After leaving NASA in 1984 he worked for Booz Allen Hamilton and later returned to NASA as Associate Administrator for Space Flight from 1989 to 1992.
