Alongside Commander Gerald Carr and Pilot William Pogue, he spent 84 days in space, setting a record for the longest crewed mission at the time. During the mission, Gibson conducted extensive solar observations using the Apollo Telescope Mount, performed three spacewalks totaling over 15 hours, and helped complete dozens of scientific experiments and Earth observations.
