Truly began his career as a naval aviator, making over 300 carrier landings and serving as a test pilot before joining the Air Force’s Manned Orbiting Laboratory program. After transferring to NASA in 1969, he supported Skylab and Apollo-Soyuz missions as CAPCOM. He was the first commander of the Naval Space Command and later led the Georgia Tech Research Institute and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory.

His honors include two NASA Distinguished Service Medals, the Presidential Citizen’s Medal, the Navy Distinguished Flying Cross, and induction into the Astronaut Hall of Fame in 2001.
