Windler played a critical role in guiding astronauts safely through some of NASA’s most iconic missions, including the dramatic rescue of Apollo 13. His calm leadership and technical expertise helped shape the success of the Apollo program and earned him the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Milton “Milt” Windler began his career as a jet fighter pilot before joining NASA in 1959 during Project Mercury. He was promoted to Flight Director by Chris Kraft and supported missions from Apollo 8 through Apollo 15, as well as all three Skylab missions. After Apollo, he worked on the Space Shuttle’s Remote Manipulator Systems until 1978. Windler is also a recipient of the NASA Exceptional Service Medal and is celebrated for his contributions to spaceflight operations and engineering excellence.
