The Last Hard Men is a 1976 western directed by Andrew V. McLaglen, based on Brian Garfield’s novel Gundown. Heston plays Sam Burgade, a retired Arizona Ranger in 1909 who is hunted by his old enemy Zach Provo, played by James Coburn, after Provo escapes from prison. The cast also includes Barbara Hershey, Michael Parks and Christopher Mitchum, and the score is by Jerry Goldsmith.

Charlton Heston won the Academy Award for Best Actor for the title role in Ben-Hur. He starred as Moses in The Ten Commandments and appeared in The Greatest Show on Earth, Touch of Evil, El Cid, Planet of the Apes, The Omega Man and Soylent Green. He also received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, the Golden Globe Cecil B. DeMille Award, the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award, the Kennedy Center Honors and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and served as president of the Screen Actors Guild from 1965 to 1971.
