Bill Conti (born April 13, 1942) is an American composer and conductor best known for creating the unforgettable score for Rocky (1976), including the legendary theme “Gonna Fly Now.” His music became a defining element of the film’s emotional power and underdog spirit, with the theme reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1977. His work continues to inspire generations of film composers and audiences alike.
Conti’s collaboration with director John G. Avildsen on Rocky launched a long-standing partnership, with Conti scoring multiple sequels including Rocky II, Rocky III, Rocky V, and Rocky Balboa. His rousing, brass-heavy compositions became synonymous with determination, grit, and triumph.
Beyond Rocky, Conti composed scores for numerous major films and TV series, including:
- The Karate Kid series
- For Your Eyes Only (James Bond)
- The Right Stuff (which earned him an Academy Award)
- Dynasty, The Colbys, and Falcon Crest
