This third Shuttle mission tested thermal systems and Canadarm operations, and was the only Shuttle flight to land at White Sands, New Mexico.
Known for his calm professionalism and technical expertise, Lousma was also selected as backup commander for the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project and served on support crews for Apollo 9 through 13.
