Celebrate the legacy of a test pilot turned space pioneer with this signed 10″ x 8″ photo of Charles Gordon Fullerton, a veteran astronaut and research pilot whose career spanned the Apollo, Shuttle, and experimental flight eras.
Fullerton began his NASA journey as part of Astronaut Group 7 in 1969, following the cancellation of the Air Force’s Manned Orbiting Laboratory program. He served on support crews for Apollo 14 through 17, and was one of the pilots of the Space Shuttle Enterprise during its 1977 Approach and Landing Tests.
He flew two space missions:
- STS-3 (Columbia) – March 22–30, 1982
As pilot, Fullerton helped test the Shuttle’s thermal performance and Canadarm operations. The mission landed at White Sands due to flooding at Edwards AFB. - STS-51-F (Challenger) – July 29 to August 6, 1985
As commander, he led the first pallet-only Spacelab mission, conducting experiments in astronomy, solar physics, and fluid dynamics.
Fullerton logged over 380 hours in space, flew more than 135 aircraft types, and continued his career as a NASA research pilot until retirement in 2007. His contributions to flight testing, including the Pegasus launch vehicle and the Russian Tu-144 supersonic transport, earned him numerous honors and a place in the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame.
