Toby Philpott was one of the key puppeteers who brought Jabba the Hutt to life in Return of the Jedi (1983). Inside the massive latex puppet, Philpott operated Jabba’s left arm, head, tongue, and body, working in tight coordination with two other performers to animate one of cinema’s most iconic villains.

Philpott’s career in animatronics began with Jim Henson’s The Dark Crystal (1982), where he played urTih the Alchemist. He went on to work on Labyrinth (1986), Little Shop of Horrors (1986), Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988), and The Company of Wolves (1984). Before his film career, he was a street performer, juggler, fire-eater, and clown, traveling across Europe and the Americas. He later helped run circus schools and worked in libraries, describing himself as “a street juggler that got lucky”.
