- STS-41-D (Discovery) – August 30 to September 5, 1984 – Commander
- STS-61-A (Challenger) – October 30 to November 6, 1985 – Commander
Hartsfield logged over 480 hours in space, including commanding the maiden flight of Space Shuttle Discovery. He was known for his calm leadership, technical expertise, and contributions to Shuttle flight systems and crew operations.
